Chairman's Corner

Dear Parent:

We love our children and we aim to protect them. Last year, the New York State Legislature passed strict measures to keep sexual predators behind bars and in facilities geared towards keeping them off the streets and away from our children.

Unfortunately, parts of that legislation are currently hung up in the courts and therefore, our children are still not secure. Across the state, not willing to wait for the courts to move forward, municipalities and counties are taking proactive measures to protect their children from violent sexual predators.

Sex Offender Watch Task Force discuss Child Safety Zones in Yorktown, NY.

Assemblyman Greg Ball has been actively working with local officials and law enforcement to safeguard children from dangerous sexual predators. The legislation bars registered sex offenders from residing, working or entering within 1,000 feet of areas designated as child safety zones. The efforts of the Assembly Sex Offender Watch Task Force resulted in the successful passage and enactment of “Child Safety Zones” laws in Putnam County and now the Assemblyman has turned his attention to enacting the same laws in Westchester County.

Supporters of this legislation include chairman of the Assembly task force, Assemblyman Mike Spano, Putnam County Legislator Tony Hay who introduced the Putnam legislation, as well as activists such as Neil Platt, whose advocacy helped pass the law. The effort to bring child safety zones to Westchester is being led by respected business owner Terrence Murphy.
